Larry Walker's Bookshelf
I have low vision which makes reading printed material tedious and unpleasant.
Therefore, I have decided to donate essentially all of my books (a few hundred
over time) to America's Bookshelf,
an online dispersed library service/book club. I have selected Western
Watersheds Project (WWP) as my designated nonprofit organization. That
means that each time one of the specific copies that I have donated changes
hands, WWP will receive a donation of $0.30.5 The following
are some of the
books that I have placed into the America's Bookshelf system so far.

1 Single copy cost of cheapest used book, including shipping and
handling ($3.49 per book) from Amazon.com. Cost as of February 16, 2006 (or date of donation if
later) subject to change
without notification.
2 Including shipping and handling, but excluding
annual membership fee.
3 Limited Availability: Special order required
without guarantee of when or if the order may be filled, nor at what cost.
4 Why obtain a book from America's Bookshelf when
there is no savings over the cost of buying the book from Amazon.com? Because
$0.30 will be donated to a nonprofit organization (if designated by the original
donor of the book) if you get the book from America's Bookshelf.5
5 America's Bookshelf has been forced to terminate their
charitable donation program, at least for now. This from America's
Bookshelf: "...very sad to report that we have to put the fundraising
portion of Americas Book Shelf on hold. When we designed our fundraiser we had
no idea that the laws were changing. CCV (commercial Co Venturing) is now in 39
states ... I think these laws were lobbied through legislation in the 39 states
by the big and controlling fundraising businesses to keep any new competition at
bay. After several meetings with my Lawyer and CPA, Deb and I have decided they
have won for now. $ 25.000 dollars annually for licensing and bonding in 39
states is just too costly at this time."
