Personal Statement
"Dr. Steven Best is an Associate Professor of Humanities and Philosophy. He earned his B.A. in philosophy at the University
of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, his M.A. at the University of Chicago, and his Ph.D at the University of Texas, Austin. He
regularly teaches modern humanities, critical thinking, ethics, social philosophy, 19th and 20th century philosophy, and
seminars on environmental theory. He has published five books and dozens of articles and reviews in the areas of
philosophy, cultural criticism, mass media, social theory, and postmodern theory. His books (all published with Guilford
Press, New York) are Postmodern Theory: Critical Interrogations (with Doug
Kellner), The Politics of Historical Vision: Marx, Foucault, and Habermas, The Postmodern
Turn: Paradigm Shifts in Art, Theory, and Science (with Doug Kellner),
The Postmodern Adventure (with Doug Kellner), and Murray Bookchin: Philosopher of
Freedom (forthcoming, 2000). He is active with ecology and animal rights groups on the
UTEP campus, and, as the dinner speaker coordinator for the El Paso Vegetarian Society, he rounds up speakers
for vegetarian dinners and speaking events. He regularly gives talks to the
community and local grade and high schools on issues related to health, animal rights, and environmental issues."
